And here we have a gem that I stumbled across on the be-mag messageboard. Props to Davengo for the be-creativity.

An NDN Insight - Geoff Phillip

For this week's NDN Insight, Geoff Phillip!

1. Basic Insight-starter; How long have you been blading? How'd you get into it?

Coming up on 8 years. I got some size 12 Roller Derby Hard-X-Corr blades for christmas and went to the skatepark for the first time on jan 1 2003 so its real easy to keep track of how much time i've invested into this. There was never a blade scene in my little town but after a couple of months i ran into some kids from out of town at the park. They showed me that your supposed to move both feet when you do a switchup and that jumping onto handrails was possible. I literally had no idea because i just sort of taught myself grinds without knowing what they were called.

2. What was it like growing up in the tiny town of Moscow, Idaho?

Haha pretty boring. I skated by myself most of the time or with my skateboarder buddies. The happiest days of my life as a teenager were when kids would come down from Spokane and skate all day. After skating mostly by myself all the time, i would always progress or learn something new when i had kids that were way better than me to watch and learn from. I always felt like i reach my highest potential when i've got a good group of kids to skate with.

3. You've been out there in Denver for a while now and you seem to be doing well. What are some similarities/differences between the scene in Denver and the scene in Boise?

Denver is the craziest skate scene i've ever experienced. it's almost like culture shock to see 35 rollerbladers in the same place after living in such a small town. In Boise you sort of know who you're gonna be skating with that day, but in denver i find myself in a different car full of different people going to different spots almost every day. Its similar in that almost everybody gets along really well and we try to have one big session a week with TNR.

4. How important is a practice rail?

Anybody that knows me is laughing at this question. Practice rails are easily my favorite thing to skate, partially because i grew up skating the same foot tall ten foot long rail. I strongly believe that as long as you have the same obstacle to skate whenever you want, whether its a prail, box, mini ramp or a ledge you will find yourself progressing at a much faster rate.

5. During the 7+ years that we've known eachother, you've always been 100% down to go skating. What keeps you motivated?

Motivation is a pretty big issue when it comes to rollerblading after you turn 18. I used to skate a lot partially because there was nothing else to do, but after a while it just sort of becomes what you do all the time. The years are hard on my body but i can't imagine what i would be doing without skating. Sometimes i'm motivated by my friends that just want to go out and skate a park all day, without trying to film clips or figure out what spot we can go to that makes everybody happy. Sometimes i'm motivated by my friends that want to go out on a clip hunt and try to push you to do bigger and better things. But my main motivation is that feeling you get after you just landed something you didn't think you could do. To me that feeling is priceless.

6. In your recent online edit (view below) you make it a point to spin both ways. (Notice: 3 left, 5 right then 3 right, 5 left) Which is natural? Same with grinds?

I spin to the right and i grind right footed. When i was younger and just started to feel really confident with my skating i sprained my knee and my ankle at the same time. The doctor told me 8 weeks before any kind of strain, but i was going nuts after five weeks so i switched from remz to TRS for the ankle support and hit the skatepark. For the next year i pretty much learned everything i already knew on my practice rail with my left foot. After i healed i noticed that a lot of tricks felt more natural with my left foot (misfits, top-torques, negatives) and had to do some catching up with my right foot. Over the years everything just sort of blended together and there are a hand full of tricks i honestly don't have a natural foot for.

7. What are 5 things that you've learned through blading?

True friendship.
False friendship.
The value of a dollar.
The value of youth.
Perseverance.

8. Other than Dayshapes & Scumpire online material, have you been filming for anything recently?

Nope, just filming and editing and putting stuff online like i always have.

9. When you aren't out rollerblading, what are you doing?

Shooting pool, annhialting anyone in my path on a nintendo64, driving my drunk friends around and smoking mass quantities of herb.

10. Any advice to kiddies that are just getting into the blade-game?

Skate a lot, don't smoke cigarettes, and skate because you want to and for no other reason.

An NDN Insight - Kyler Martz

This week's NDN Insight, Kyler Martz!

1. Kyler N. Martz, how long have you been blading? How'd you get into it?

Geez, 11 years i think. Kids in my neighborhood made fun of me trying to do jumps in my mom's skates, so I got some Backyard Bobs. Then i went to a 13 Rivers contest, met Adam Robert and we became obsessed.

2. 10 word Martz-filled nutshell:

Ha, um lemme give it to you in poetic form:
Martz man got that style,
Cruisin' his blades,
Hella' fast.

3. I know you're moving soon. Where to? Any reasons in particular?

Ah I'm just moving down the road. The new place has a basement where I can spread out the art stuff a bit more. Seattle is tight for now. However, I will probably move away for grad school eventually.

4. Now that you've had ample amounts of time in both the Boise skate scene and that of Seattle, what are some similarities and differences?

Both places are great to skate. I'll take rain over cold any day though. Seattle has tons and tons of fun stuff to skate, but Boise was a great place to start skating, miss all you guys a lot.

5. When you aren't out bootin', what are you doing?

Hanging in my art cave listening to audio books, or tinkering on some old bike, maybe thrifting with the Futch.

6. Who are 3 of your favorite bladers to watch at the time being?

I can safely say that even if I wasn't from Boise, Erik Bailey would still be my favorite blader to watch. Casey McFarland and Ross Kuhn are so sick, as well as Jon Bolino. That's a tough question, I've seen a lot of serious shredders lately...

NDN Chickee

7. Did Jay or Ty ever pay you for the true savannah you did in "I Was A Cloud"? They owed you $40 total, right?

No way, big time claimers. Ty has payed me back in spliffage I'm sure. Whitmore, watch yo back.

8. You seem to be making good moves with your art. Where does your inspiration come from?

I love the ocean obviously, so getting to live by it has been a huge pull. Every other book in the thrift stores here is some badass old oceanography book. I love collecting those, and take inspiration from them. Too many other things inspire me to list them all. I hope I'm lucky enough to always have that problem.

9. You've been gone from your stomping grounds for a while now...how bad do you miss Fort Boise?!?

Now I'm gonna be thinking about how bad I want to skate there the rest of the day! Good ol' Fort!

10. The Valo Kyler Pack is awesome, great job with that. Got anything to say to the Rollernews fans?

Ha! I better take a pass on this one! I am pretty stoked to have had that opportunity. Let's just say I'd rather be sewing bags than doing whatever those dudes do all day...

Thanks for the Insight Brick Oven Billstro! Good luck with the new video!

10. Any hopes/plans for 2011?

Bailey at AMall.

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

My dad, Steve Bill has been struggling with severe health issues for about 4 years now. Today he had a doctor's appointment and there were multiple physicians on hand to tell him that he "is a dying man" and that they're surprised he's still around. Needless to say, they aren't estimating that his life will last much longer. I don't believe in any type of God...but I'm definitely hoping for the best with my dad. If you know him or care to help out even if you don't know him, please do the same and hope for the best.

He loves blading and his NDN homies.

Didn't stray too far from home with this week's NDN Insight.

Phil Davidson!

1. What does The NDN mean to you?

The NDN to me is the best group of friends a guy can have and some of the best, most funny times of my life! Along with the filming, editing and the great pursuit of clips.

2. When and how did you get into blading?

I started blading when I was 10 years old. My cousin gave me a pair of walmart blades so I started going to Rhodes and learned to drop in. I really enjoyed it so my grandma got me a pair of RB Suedes. I've always stuck with blading...it's my life and I can't think of anything else I'd rather be doing.

3.You took the gnarliest most disgusting fall I've ever seen. What was up with that?

I remember skating up to the rail and jumping to backslide...then waking up in the hospital more fucked up than that favorite uncle in my family. I got the spins from all the morphine so I told the doctor I was doing a 900. He looked at my mom and asked her if that was some kind of drug haha. She explained that it was a blading trick. I told myself over and over that I wasn't ever going to be able to blade again. When I looked back at the clip I was shocked that I lost that much blood and still live to tell the story. I'm truely grateful for the friends I had with me that day and for Erik not throwing up and blacking out from all the blood. I had to wear an eye patch for three months. You don't know what you have until you've lost it. After going to hell and back I got back on the blades with more passion and motivation than ever.

Phil's personalized cookie at the Boise 'I Was A Cloud' premiere.

4. What's it like being a father?

Being a father is kinda' like landing a rail for the first time. You're proud and have a sense of accomplishment but don't know what to do in a way. Every day when you wake to see they've learned something new is amazingly beautiful.

Phil's daughter...with an NDN sticker on her forehead.

5. Who are 3 of your favorite bladers to watch at the time being?

I would have to say Shima, Stockwell and Farmer. Just 'cause they always push the sport to new levels.

6. If you aren't out booting, what are you up to?

If I am not booting there are 3 things I do: work, watch my baby girl Kairi, and kick some ass in Phantasy Star Portable 2.

Phil and his blade.

7. Which section/tricks are you most looking forward to in Dayshapes?

Damn, that's a hard question. You're really putting me in the hot seat here...
I guess it would have to be Nick Swan. It's his first NDN section plus his style/trick vocabulary is unique and smooth.

8. You get distracted easily by cars, bystanders, Corey, etc....How do you make yourself get over those things?

My mind wanders way too easily. I try to stay focused and block the shit out but sometimes it can be a real challenge. The best way I get through it is to tell Corey, my mind, the weirdo's with their kids running around screaming, and any other crazy stuff going on around me to sssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! for 2 seconds. If I don't land it...gotta' do it all over again.

9. I really like the story about when you first met Erik Bailey, care to share?

Haha ok. So, I was 10 and had just gotten into blading. One day I'm down at rhodes and Mr. Bailey shows up with Eli Dorsey. I went up to Bailey and asked for his autograph. He wrote 'vagina' and told me to go show it to my mom. I'm pretty sure he doesn't remember it but it's a good laugh now because I skate with him frequently.

10. Explain the ideal session to Fetus Phil.

Rhodes with my homies. Learning new tricks and switches is the best.

Been turning shitty weather into productivity. Just this morning we stole a rail, made concrete launches up to it, cemented the rail into the ground...and we bladed a kayak on top of snow mounds!
